7th Framework Programme

Detailed objective 1

The targeted main achievements associated with this objective are:

·         A set of adaptable semantic typology models of energy-efficient healthcare buildings and districts, for both new design and retrofitting projects. STREAMER enhances and applies semantic modelling for building and neighbourhood design to be used as a validated design template / baseline models according to the classification / taxonomy of healthcare services, key medical equipment, building types, climate zones, and smart-grid infrastructures. The set of semantic models will contain:

-          3D morphology models and common properties of the components, buildings, and healthcare districts;

-          semantic process models of the healthcare services, building operations, and construction plans;

-          semantic knowledge models of the expert’s and user’s perceptions and knowhow.

This is a radical innovation to frame and quantify complex problems, and validating the design solutions. It totally replaces the traditional design approach (‘starting from scratch’ or ‘reinventing the wheel’).

The knowhow of the operational performance of existing buildings and the actual achievements of energy-efficiency retrofitting will be (re-)used as empirical knowledge in a precedence-based design approach. The effects of design alternatives will be visualised and analysed using the semantic models.

·         A process roadmap of participatory semantics-driven design for energy-efficient buildings.

The concepts of semantics-driven design that directly reflects knowledge-based designing will be translated into practical steps for participatory design in healthcare district projects. This process roadmap will also include the method for capturing the tacit knowledge of building occupants in semantic design models, and for semantic knowledge sharing and management within and between design teams.

·          Real demonstration and validation projects sustained by an Implementers Community (IC).

At 4 real healthcare district projects in 4 different EU countries, the participatory design sessions and the feasibility of Integrated Project Delivery (IPD) will be demonstrated. Through action research, STREAMER’s results will be improved and validated, and a benchmarking will be conducted over at least 20 other real cases in addition to the 4 demonstration projects. The stakeholders and interested parties will establish an Implementers Community (IC) for wider and sustainable knowledge dissemination and embedding in the EU.
