Commisariat a l'Energie Atomique et aux Énergies Alternatives

CEA is the French Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission (Commissariat à l'énergie atomique et aux énergies alternatives). With its 16000 employees, CEA is active in four main areas: low-carbon energies, defence and security, information technologies and health technologies. Key figures include about 150 start-ups since 1984 in the innovative technologies sector, a 4,3 billion euros yearly budget and more than 530 European projects obtained with CEA participation under the European FP7 since 2007.

In this project, CEA will participate through the LIST Institute, which focuses its research activities on developing innovative technologies for smart and complex systems. Its R&D programmes, aiming at major economic and social implications, centre on interactive systems (ambient intelligence), embedded systems (architecture, software and systems engineering), sensors and signal processing (industrial control systems, health, security and metrology). Dedicated to technological research, CEA LIST’s more than 700 researchers and technicians strive to encourage innovation and technology transfer through long-term industrial partnerships. The dynamism of the Institute's teams, their project-based culture and their consistently high standard of scientific excellence underpin this objective. With around 300 scientific publications a year, 263 active patents (in 2011) and 100 licences, CEA LIST is a significant stakeholder of the European technological research landscape.

Main roles in STREAMER

- Leader of Work Package 7 on demonstration and validation, especially by assisting and coordinating the effort of all partners associated with the demonstration projects to develop the BIM/GIS/Semantic design models of the real projects, and to accommodate the testing and validation of the related design methods and tools.

- Leader of Task 6.1 on energy-oriented semantic design configurator, in direct relation with the development of the energy simulation tools operating on the integrated BIM-GIS platform.

- Lead investigator in energy assessment, design optimisation and lifecycle design decision-support tools (WP3), especially by developing the design guidance based on fuzzy logic expert systems.

- Active partner in knowledge dissemination and valorisation, and benchmarking at EU level.

Key persons involved

- Dr. Hassan Sleiman is a research engineer in CEA LIST institute, with a focus on knowledge engineering and software engineering in the building and construction domain. Hassan holds an MsC (2008) and a PhD (2012) in Software Engineering from the University of Seville (Spain), and has an extensive background in knowledge engineering, software engineering, and building information modelling. Hassan has a large record of involvements in National and European collaborative projects – currently lead technical contributor in the STREAMER project, focusing on optimised design methodologies for energy-efficient buildings integrated in the neighbourhood.

- Mr. Sylvain Robert (Senior Research Engineer) has an initial background in embedded software and 10 years of experience in software engineering. Since 2009, he has been leading R&D on the application of software engineering and machine learning techniques to energy and building domains. Has been involved in EU projects as a task and WP leader. In the field of ICT for energy and buildings, he is currently the coordinator of the PLUMES research project (French National Research agency, 2010-2013, 2 M€), WP leader in the RESILIENT European project (FP7, 2012- 2016, 8M€), and WP leader in the Enerficiency European project (ITEA2, 2011-2014, 10 M€). Since 2011, he is the CEA’s representative at the Energy Efficient Building Association (E2BA). In  STREAMER, Sylvain will be the project manager of CEA, with a specific focus on BIM-based collaborative design.

- Dr. Jean-Philippe Poli (Research Engineer) obtained his PhD in Computer Sciences in 2007 from University Paul Cézanne in Marseilles, on the automatic structuring of television archives. He was involved in K-Space (network of excellence) and in a national project in massive data (former name of Big Data). He joined the CEA LIST for a two-years postdoctoral fellowship in 2007 and now he works at the Information, Models and Learning Laboratory at CEA LIST. His interests range from complex system modelling to decision systems, with a great focus on fuzzy expert systems. He has been involved in several Systematic projects (regional funds): MOBISIC (CEA leader, 9M€), DESCARTES (6M€), and several industrial projects. Jean-Philippe will be the technical manager of CEA participation in STREAMER.
