Work Package 2: Methods for flexible construction processes at urban sites

This work package is led by partner NCC. The aim is to contribute to the increasing demands for higher quality, shorter construction times and reduced environmental impact. An integrated process approach will ensure that a sustainable solution will be achieved, avoiding the normal sub-optimization in the traditional construction process.

 

A proactive virtual planning, will contribute to avoid conflict and unnecessary transport and achieve zero inventory and zero waste at construction sites towards to zero carbon emission construction. Simultaneously, using a system engineering approach, PANTURA will identify the stakeholder values, opportunities and threats. In this way, PANTURA will support the infrastructure owners, consultants and contractors to identify the added value of sustainable solutions. An integrated procurement strategy customised for infrastructure projects will then facilitate the performance-based tender and contracting procedures.

 

The work in WP2 consists of three tasks:

 

Proactive construction process strategy

The aim is to establish a proactive, integrated process strategy to enable the forecasting of potential crises in order to avoid or limit their negative effects. Some of the key elements of this should include a closer partnership between all stakeholders, improved communication, visualisation and handling of data and economic, societal and environmental goals.

 

Systems engineering

Systems engineering is an instrument for structuring, verification and validation of construction management processes and managing the interaction between client, contractor and other actors in a complex urban environment.

 

This task will result in a description of a systematic process for the design, construction and renovation of bridges in a densely populated urban area. Emphasis is put on life-cycle assessment and the prevention of negative impacts from pollution, delays and resource consumption.

 

Part of the Systems engineering instrument is a roadmap describing how to decompose client's requirements into concrete design goals and construction methods, organised in the interests of the stakeholders and other social and environmental parties.

 

Performance-based procurement

Performance-based procurement encourages the transition to a more competitive, innovative and creative construction industry. This task will analyse the different types of procurement methods and highlight their advantages and risks. Subsequently new professional relationships between the parties involved in an urban infrastructure project based on performance-based procurement will be described. The result will be guidelines to configure the process and requirements of performance-based procurement and ways to stimulate contractor-led innovations through two-stage contracting and open-solution life-cycle assessment specification.
