Work Package 4: Flexible construction techniques for new bridges

This work package is led by partner MOSTOSTAL. The aim is to develop methods and technologies that provide alternative, effective methods for the new construction of bridges in densely populated urban environments covering new integrated design and engineering solutions for flexible off- and on-site fabrication, construction techniques and on-site assembly methods.

The work in WP4 consists of three tasks:

Integrated design and engineering

This task will introduce new design and engineering solutions for the off-site fabrication and on-site assembly of bridges made of new materials, such as pure composite FRP bridges, composite decks on steel girders or timber bridges with concrete or composite deck elements precast in the factory in composite interaction). The final new design concept will represent a compromise between maximum bending stiffness, an index of bucking resistance, and moment capacity, minimum cost and weight, a number of inequality constraints involving stresses and deflections, optimal frequency with rapid installation and a long service life target. The report from this task provides technical specifications for the new concept design and engineering, including design guidelines, best practices and lessons learned for the design solutions for off-site fabrication and on-site assembly.

Flexible off- and on-site construction techniques

Interest will focus on detailing for assembly with regard to the connections between bridge elements, such as FR decks and steel girders. These connections will be detailed, formed and designed in a way that enables rapid, time-efficient assembly on site to prevent traffic disruption during the construction period. The aim of this task is to provide solutions and techniques that enables total construction time reduction by at least 20%.

Flexible assembly methods

For a high degree of effectiveness, it is crucial to minimise human work, traffic disruption and social costs. Procedures for the on-site assembly process will be created to make life easier and safer for the workers involved in assembly using simple, clear-cut rules. These assembly techniques will make it possible to turn construction sites into high-technological areas, clean work environments and swift and safer conditions by applying ICT solutions and robotics. The construction techniques for new bridges will also include solutions for piling and foundations, as well as the recycling of construction waste.
